Family Matters partners with youth, families, and communities to cultivate a way of living in the world that develops strong relationships, meaningful communication, and safe environments for courageous social change.

We seek to build an equitable society for all.

Family Matters’ Walk-a-Thon raises critical funds to support:

  • The Family Matters School, a K-4 cooperative microschool with a focus on experiential learning
  • Respectful Communities, a Principles of Leadership training course
  • Project RISE, a teen job-skills training and leadership development program
  • Partners in Learning, a one-to-one after-school tutoring/mentoring program
  • Community Engagement, a partnership with families and members of the community involved in ongoing activities and initiatives beyond those participating in daily programming

    It’s Walk-A-Thon number 34!

Throughout those years I have been sunburned, freezing cold, drenched, and just right; and always filled with joy at the opportunity to connect with old friends, meet new ones, and share and celebrate the accomplishments of the past year. I am so deeply grateful to you for your steadfast support of the work of Family Matters.

This year promises to be our most exciting one yet as we implement cutting edge curriculum in The Family Matters School, create new job opportunities for the teens, deepen connections in the community, and so much more. It is, in large part, because of you that our work is possible.
    THANK YOU!

    Fueling a Love of Learning

The Family Matters School (TFMS) is a specialty, culturally competent Kindergarten-4th grade microschool designed to fuel children’s innate desire to learn. The children of TFMS explore global cultures, language arts, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics), German wheel gymnastics, and Spanish. Amenities include a comfortable library, Chromebooks, a Peace Room, outdoor recreation space, and a recording studio. Breakfast and lunch are provided.

Children in grades K-4 follow their curiosity and become confident in their abilities as learners.

Advancing Youth Leadership and Job Access

Teens ages 13-18 gain on-the-job training and build leadership skills while earning a stipend. The project is designed to build employment equity.

Over the course of the academic year, teens write and edit their resumes, practice interview skills, investigate individual career interests with guest speakers, and choose job placements at partner neighborhood businesses. A diverse team of adult volunteer mentors offers financial literacy, goal-setting, and social-emotional learning support. Building leadership skills is central to the Project RISE experience. In collaboration with their teammates, the teens identify a social justice or community engagement project to be completed over the course of the year that will make a difference in their communities. The teens in Project RISE engage in first-time experiences through field trips and youth-led activities.

    Building Education Equity

    Partners in Learning One-to-One Tutor/Mentoring

Youth in grades 1-12 are paired with a dedicated tutor/mentor for the school year.

Individually matched youth/adult pairs meet weekly for 90-minute, one-to-one tutor/mentoring sessions. Activities, provided through individualized lesson plans, focus on academic support, social-emotional learning, goal setting, and college- and career-readiness. Weekly activities are supplemented with monthly hands-on science and art projects, sharing circles, and twice-yearly “first-time experience” field trips. Family Matters regularly provides enrichment opportunities for tutor/mentors on relevant topics. New volunteers are most welcome and training is provided.
